It sets a five year path for teams to work together on four priority areas: restorative methods for research with collections; restorative practices for language arts; place-based&nbsp;knowledge practices; and continuous expressions of Indigenous sovereignties. The proposed plan also seeks to create five research hubs throughout the Great Lakes region.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/grasac.artsci.utoronto.ca\/?page_id=603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cara<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/grasac\/profile\/cara-krmpotich\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Krmpotich<\/a>, who directs the Museum Studies Program at the University of Toronto and who has been heavily involved with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grasac.artsci.utoronto.ca\/?p=178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GRASAC\u2019s Partnership Development Grant (2016-19)<\/a>, has kindly agreed to take the lead on this new PG application.\u00a0Initial plans and research foci were formulated at an extremely fruitful large\u00a0planning meeting this past May in Toronto, and have been refined through smaller consultations with GRASAC\u2019s Steering Committee, past and present leadership, research teams, and a second meeting for research leaders from the five proposed hubs.\u00a0Chi miigwech and nia:wen to all of you who travelled to Toronto to participate in these meetings!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"823\" src=\"https:\/\/grasac.artsci.utoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/May-Meeting-Composite-min-1024x823.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grasac.artsci.utoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/May-Meeting-Composite-min-1024x823.png 1024w, https:\/\/grasac.artsci.utoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/May-Meeting-Composite-min-300x241.png 300w, https:\/\/grasac.artsci.utoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/May-Meeting-Composite-min-768x617.png 768w, https:\/\/grasac.artsci.utoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/May-Meeting-Composite-min-1536x1234.png 1536w, https:\/\/grasac.artsci.utoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/May-Meeting-Composite-min.png 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>From the May PG planning meeting: admiring gorgeous quillwork by Yvonne Walker Keshick (above) and Judy Pierzynowski (below); David George-Shongo Jr. presenting on Indigenous data sovereignty; great discussion in the GRASAC methodologies &amp; material engagement break-out group!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Letter of Intent was submitted to SSHRC on February 15, 2019, with the support of two First Nations, five universities and 27 GRASAC members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe funding we are pursuing is highly competitive, but&nbsp;<em><strong>designed to support research done in true partnership<\/strong><\/em>,\u201d says Cara Krmpotich. \u201c<em><strong>For that reason, it\u2019s a great fit for GRASAC.<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;We have this opportunity to think deeply about our Alliance as a partnership of people and heritage items within universities, cultural institutions and communities, who are from multiple Great Lakes nations, and who have relations with lands, waters, and beings.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this spring, GRASAC successfully secured funding from the University of Toronto\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.utoronto.ca\/news\/power-partnership-u-t-initiative-funds-collaborative-research-between-faculty-and-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Community Partnership Research Program<\/a>&nbsp;for a two-day workshop hosted by Rama First Nation. The workshop will continue to build GRASAC\u2019s research program by asking participants to voice how \u201cresearch outcomes and impact\u201d can be understood from Great Lakes\u2019 community perspectives.
