GRASAC Ethical Guidelines Report

October 1, 2022 by chass_wp-admin

By Aidan Mitchell-Boudreau

This past summer, I worked on producing recommendations for an update to GRASAC’s ethical guidelines for my Critical Digital Humanities Institute summer fellowship. A primary objective was to assess the compatibility of these guidelines with OCAP and UNDRIP principles, as well as with other emerging best practices in the field of ethical data governance. I took the OCAP First Nations data governance course, reviewed scholarly literature related to the history of and current developments in Indigenous data governance, and looked at the ethical guidelines of similar organizations to inform my recommendations.

Overwhelmingly, the recommendations made are not drastic changes to how work is approached at GRASAC, but rather, they reflect the ethically sound practices that are already present in the organization. It was a fantastic experience and I hope to remain involved in the process, wherever I might be helpful, as the ethical guidelines are discussed by the Steering Committee and others later this year.
