Congratulations to Annette de Stecher, winner of the 2023 Canadian Historical Association Indigenous History Book Prize

Intricate and skillful Wendat embroidery graces the cover of Wendat Women’s Arts by Annette de Stecher.

A warm congratulations to long-time GRASAC researcher Annette de Stecher for her book Wendat Women’s Arts, which was awarded the 2023 Indigenous History Book Award from the Canadian Historical Association. Beautifully illustrated, and robust in its historical, cultural, and gendered contexts, Wendat Women’s Arts blends “art historical approaches in a framework of community knowledge.” As the commendation further reads, de Stecher weaves together biographies, photography, archives and cultural belongings to forefront Wendat women’s influence in geopolitics, diplomacy, economics, social dynamics and cultural life.

Wendat Women’s Arts was published in 2022 by McGill-Queen’s University Press.

Receiving the award alongside de Stecher was Lianne Leddy for her book Serpent River Resurgence: Confronting Uranium Mining at Elliot Lake (University of Toronto Press, 2022). It was a banner year for Great Lakes history at the CHA!
