A little serendipity can go a long way! A recent email from Wendat artist Manon Sioui led Cara Krmpotich to do a search for Wendat relatives in the GKS. Front of mind were Wendat items in the Ethnologisches Museum Berlin that Cara had been updating records for, but then she noticed a pair of moose leg wall hangings in the Museum Volkenkunde in the Netherlands. The wall hangings have two pairs of embroidered patches on them – one pair of which is remarkably similar to a pair of embroidered patches in Berlin.
The conversation about these patches continues. We invite you to join in! Do you think they were made by the same person? By friends or relatives? By people inspired by the same design trends? Moving beyond the embroidery, Manon has suspicions about the kinds of hair used in the cones—looking so closely and carefully at the hair fibres themselves. We will continue to update the records as we learn more and welcome additional insights.
